What Is Folding?
Folding@Home is a world wide distributed computing project initiated by the University Of Stanford. This project takes on the task of simulating how proteins fold and misfold within the human body. This is extremely important for solving the mysteries of diseases and illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
In layman’s terms, you essentially have one gigantic super computer, made up of personal computers like yours and mine. This “super-computer” isĀ doing a vast amount of calculations and simulations, all for the betterment of medical research.
